Why does the acrylic bathtub turn yellow?

The discoloration of acrylic bathtubs is not an isolated incident but rather the result of the cumulative effect of various factors over time.Understanding these reasons not only helps us clean more effectively but also prevents issues at their source.

  1. The issue of water quality is the primary “killer”.In many regions, tap water has relatively high levels of calcium and magnesium ions. These minerals deposit on the surface of the bathtub and gradually oxidize into yellow scale. If the water temperature is high, these minerals will accelerate crystallization.
  2. Ultraviolet rays and high temperatures are invisible destroyers. If the bathroom window is unobstructed, direct sunlight can cause the acrylic molecular chains to break, leading to photooxidation reactions.Exposure to high-temperature steam or hot water can also accelerate this process.
  3. Improper daily use. Many people are accustomed to using rough sponges to clean acrylic bathtubs. These tools will scratch the surface of the acrylic, forming tiny scratches. The dirt is hidden inside and turns yellow after oxidation.Strong alkaline cleaning products such as bleach can also corrode surface coatings and cause color fading.
  4. Aging is an irreversible factor. After 5-10 years of use, the material of acrylic bathtubs will naturally age and the surface gloss will decrease. This is more common on economy-sized bathtubs, as they are thinner in thickness and less durable than high-end products. But the good news is that with proper maintenance, most yellowing can be reversed in a short period of time, avoiding the hassle of replacing the bathtub.
